Essential oil and smoke components of Carissa spinarum

ABSTRACT. Carissa spinarum Linn. is an incense plant traditionally used in Ethiopia and other countries for the treatment of numerous diseases. It also exhibits different biological activities, classes natural compounds were previously reported from plant. In this study, essential oil roots C. together with medicinal smoke obtained burnt analyzed by GC-MS. The was predominantly composed 2-hydroxyacetophenone (82.97%). dominant components n-hexane soluble fraction derived 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (14.16%), 2-methoxyphenol (10.34%) (9.51%). On hand, major MeOH-soluble (17.51%), (13.02%) (10.98%). showed 92.60 ± 0.34% DPPH inhibition at concentration 100 µg/mL. At same concentration, standard ascorbic acid scavenged radical 96.09 0.16%. This result supports traditional use material as a skin-care wound healing agent most likely due to presence simple phenols biologically active compounds.
